FOR INSPIRATION AND RECOGNITION OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY
WHAT IS FIRST?
FIRST is an acronym that stands “For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology”. According to the website, it combines the excitement of sport with the rigors of science and technology. We call FIRST Robotics Competition the ultimate Sport for the Mind. High-school student participants call it “the hardest fun you’ll ever have.” Under strict rules, limited resources, and an intense six-week time limit, teams of 20 or more students are challenged to raise funds, design a team “brand,” hone teamwork skills, and build and program industrial-size robots to play a difficult field game against like-minded competitors.
It’s as close to real-world engineering as a student can get. Volunteer professional mentors lend their time and talents to guide each team. Each season ends with an exciting FIRST Championship.
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF PARTICIPATING ON FIRST?
Being part of FIRST has a lot of perks. For starters, FIRST encourages you to use abilities you rarely use in high school, like asking for sponsorship, learning how to program using LabVIEW, making a business plan, among other things.
This helps you to become a more prepared person, and if this wasn’t enough, they are a lot of scholarship available to FIRST students in Colleges located all around the United States.
HOW CAN I PARTICIPATE IN FRC?
Participating in FRC is a demanding experience in which the students requires to invest a lot of time and energy. If you believe you have what it requires to be part of FIRST, you are ready to join your local team.
In case there is no team you can join you might as well create your own team, just make sure to invite people who are as interested as you are in participating.
